December Meet and Festive Quiz

It's a truth universally acknowledged that as soon as somebody is hailed as being quite good at something they will immediately not be able to log in to write this post...

Meeting times

Our meeting opened with Pam giving a couple of important announcements regarding the next few meetings. Unfortunately next year we will not be able to use the Upper Vestry on a Tuesday so we will have to make some changes:

  • January and February we will be meeting on the third Tuesday as normal but we'll be holding the meeting in the main part of St George's Church. Initially we'll gather as usual in the Upper Vestry hallway for drinks before we go in to the church itself.
  • March... We have to be a little vague as the time and location is still to be confirmed.
  • From April and onwards we will be back in the Upper Vestry but unfortunately have to move to a Wednesday night.
The alternative would have been to try and find a new venue which the committee agreed would prove difficult. Near the time we will send out email reminders to members of the changes and the A-board will also be updated to show the change of venue. I for one am really looking forward to seeing inside the main church as it is reputed to be one of Hawksmoor's finest!

Our craft evening will remain at the Seven Dials Club on the first Tuesday in the month, our next evening being on January 7th 2014.

Campaigns

Pam handed over to Jenny to manage the voting for both next year's WI major campaign and whether we should support the No More Page Three campaign we learned about last month. Jenny explained that only members could vote and we all had one vote each! The potential campaigns are:
  • Increasing organ donations
  • Campaign against female genital mutilation
  • Provision of non-acute hospital beds
  • Funding for Women's centres which cater for the specific needs of vulnerable women at risk of offending
The vast number of votes cast on the evening were for the campaign against female genital mutilation. If you couldn't vote then please contact Jenny with your vote as detailed in the last email!

Jenny explained that for the No More Page Three campaign vote we were looking for a simple majority and if carried our support would take the form of:
  • Add a supporting article on our blog
  • Our website would link to their website
  • And finally if we decide they can use our logo (Helena is working on it!) then they could also use the NFWI logo
Just before the vote Jenny pointed out that the Shoreditch Sisters have already voted to support the campaign. After a quick show of hands we had a simple majority and the resolution was carried!

Finally, Jane stood to explain about the a Shoreditch Sister campaign to raise awareness of the women detained in the Yarl's Wood Immigration Removal Centre. If you'd like to support them by making a 10cm x 10cm square to add to the Knitted Together Quilt then please make sure your knitted, crocheted, embroidered or stitched patch to the campaign by the 8th of February 2014. Jane has kindly volunteered to coordinate any submissions!

Festive Quiz

And on to the quiz! The quiz master for the evening was the actor Steven Wickham. The quiz format was deviously simple, the teams would consist of pairs of two or even three ladies divided as the A player and the B player. At the end of each round after self scoring the A player would stay where they were and the B player would move on to another team. This is wonderful as it means you get to socialise with lots of different ladies and it does symbolise what the WI does best, working together.

The winning team!
In the end, after an excellent selection of rounds put together by Steven, the winning team was Jenny as the A member with my guest for the evening Clare as the B member. Astonishingly they were dressed in what looked suspiciously like a team uniform so any accusations of a fix may be well founded...

All in all it was a wonderful evening, our thanks go to Steven for arranging the challenging questions and Jane for locating some suitable prizes.

See you all in 2014!

With a wide range of quality stalls to browse, delicious food to sample, and expert advice on hand,  a day out at the Fair is the perfect way to start your Christmas shopping and get inspired for the festive season. You’ll be able to find unique gifts for friends and family, pick up seasonal tips in the Lifestyle Theatre and even do some late night shopping with a complimentary glass of wine at the Gala Evening, where you’ll be treated to a special performance by the West End’s Jersey Boys. And for any foodies, we recommend a visit to the Food Hall, a gastronomic heaven full of tempting and tasty Christmas goodies. 15th of October Meet: Paula Principle

The Paula Principle…

Most women work below their level of competence

How and why does this happen? Tom Schuller is exploring this, as a man, because it seems to him important as a matter of fairness; and because it matters to all of us, men as well as women, that everyone gets the opportunity to put their competences to use.

Tom will be speaking to us about the Paula  Principle on Tuesday (15/10/2013). For more information about the Paula Principle visit Tom's website  www.paulaprinciple.com .

Where? We will be meeting at our usual home of St George's, Bloomsbury. Upper Vestry Room, St George's Bloomsbury, 6 Little Russell Street, London WC1A 2HR. Doors open at 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start.

Please bring along refreshments to share with the group, (they don’t have to be home made!)

The meeting will be free for LWEWI members and £3 for guests. If you would like to come along to the next meeting then email us at londonwestendwi@gmail.com.

Open House 21st-22nd September 2013: Round-up

We had a marvellous weekend at St George's selling our home made cakes, jams and chutneys. I  even had a bash at baking and to my clueless baker surprise I managed to bake 3 dark chocolate tarts (I blame GBBO fever)! It was great to meet lots of interesting people and some prospective new members over the weekend!

Our lovely cake stall at St George's!

The Secretary Returns

I have been taking a bit of a break from my secretary duties over Summer.

Whilst I have been off I have judged a bake off at Westminster Council. They were raising money for Tarts for Troops and raised over £200!

It's a hard job, but someone's got to do it...
I also got married which was a rather fancy way to spend the day! I made over 300 hundred flowers from felt by hand with a little help from my family and some lovely ladies at the London West End WI!

My lovely bouquet that was pinched during the day!
Now that I am back please be patient whilst I try to catch up on all my secretary duties!

16th April Meet: Love Food Hate Waste

Every month some households are throwing away up to £50 of food shopping. That’s a lot of food and drink!

Most of our wasted food and drink ends up in landfill sites where it rots and releases methane, a damaging greenhouse gas. The food and drink we throw away is also a huge waste of the energy, water and packaging used
in its production, transportation and storage.

Reducing food and drink waste is a massive opportunity for your community to reduce waste, save money and minimise your impact on the environment.

This will be an interactive session with activities where we will discuss what we can all do to cut food waste and share recipes and tips

This exhibition will be the first ever held on these important cities at the British Museum, and the first such major exhibition in London for almost 40 years. It is the result of close collaboration with the Archaeological Superintendency of Naples and Pompeii, will bring together over 250 fascinating objects, both recent discoveries and celebrated finds from earlier excavations. Many of these objects have never before been seen outside Italy. The exhibition will have a unique focus, looking at the Roman home and the people who lived in these ill-fated cities. source

Happy New Year!

Happy new year from the London West End Women's Institute!

Now that we have officially started 2013 it is the perfect time to start something new, like joining us! We believe in offering women fun, fellowship and friendship. We meet in the heart of the West End, surrounded by some of London's most famous landmarks and areas.

We were formed 7 years ago by a group of women living locally who wanted to get local women together. Our members mainly live or work within close proximity to the area, but we welcome members from all areas (even the other side of the river!).
